Listen. Do you smell something?

It seems like I read somewhere that the sense of smell is one of the strongest factors in remembering things.  Some things are definitely worth remembering as far as that goes.  Like a steak on the grill; fresh-baked cookies (oatmeal raisin, of course); pretty much anything with lemons.

Then there are the places we associate with certain smells.  The movie theatre and popcorn; your dentist's breath and 3-hour old Listerine; the bathrooms at most state parks and, well if you've been there you know. Trust me.

Something strange happened to me the other day and I'm not sure how to take it.  I went into the bathroom at work and it smelled good.  I don't mean it smelled Pine-Sol clean, I mean it smelled so good I wanted to hang out in the bathroom for awhile.  It smelled like somebody had just baked a pie in the bathroom.

Don't get me wrong.  I don't enjoy walking into a bathroom and hitting the Wall of Voodoo that someone left behind, but I sure as hell don't expect to walk in and smell fresh baked bread.  That's just not the kind of loaf that gets pinched in a bathroom.  Know what I mean?

As I left the bathroom to head back to work I couldn't help but wonder if I should feel ashamed.  I mean no one should be walking into a bathroom to enjoy the smell.  Should they?
